Our Story
1973
The Donegal Golf Club - Murvagh links officially opened for play in 1973 when legendary Irish golf course architect Eddie Hackett transformed the remarkable peninsula landscape into what many consider one of his finest creations. Often referred to as the "Muirfield of Ireland", the course immediately established itself as one of Ireland's premier links golf destinations.
Eddie Hackett
Hackett's philosophy was simple: allow the natural landscape to dictate the golf. His routing across the dunes and natural contours of Murvagh created a course that remains true to its surroundings and the traditions of links golf.
Pat Ruddy
In 1992, renowned golf course architect Pat Ruddy introduced a series of thoughtful enhancements, modernising the course while respecting Eddie Hackett’s original design and distinctive character.
Paul McGinley
Today, Paul McGinley (McGinley Golf Design) continues the evolution of Murvagh through a long-term masterplan focused on preserving and enhancing the natural links landscape. The vision is clear: to ensure Donegal Golf Club remains a traditional, classic and timeless championship links experience for future generations.
Course Facts
Donegal Golf Course is a links course built on a promontory of 182 acres that extends out into the Atlantic Ocean. The course, built on land of geological significance, was inhabited in past centuries, and the earliest of Irish maps indicate this.
With five par fives, four par threes and a routing that explores every corner of the peninsula, Murvagh offers a memorable challenge for golfers of all abilities. Combined with breath-taking scenery and exceptional conditioning, it is easy to understand why the course is regarded as one of Ireland's finest links experiences.
